[Script] Shelley, or, The Idealist. A Tragi-comedy.

London: English Stage Company (Royal Court), 1965. [Theatre] Cast member Lucy Fleming's working script of the premier production of Shelley, signed several times. A vintage original production-used script. Octavo (28 x 22cm), pp.114, mimeograph, bound in stiff yellow wrappers with die-cut title window, fastened internally with two metal clasps. Royal Court slip tipped in, flyer for a Christmas clowning show tucked in. Annotated throughout and SIGNED by Fleming eight times to covers and title page, perhaps practising for autographs... Worn consistent with age and rehearsal use but generally well preserved. Scarce, as there is no evidence the play was ever revived. Shelley was staged at the Royal Court in 1965, written and directed by Jellicoe, starring Ronald Pickup in the title role, with Iain Cuthbertson, Kika Markham and Lucy Fleming. Jellicoe's most notable play is The Knack, first performed at the Royal Court in 1962. A major hit, it was later filmed in 1965, winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and is emblematic of the Swinging London cultural phenomenon and 'sixties sexual revolution. It was the first movie appearance of Jane Birkin and Charlotte Rampling. Lucy Fleming, then aged 18, played two roles in Shelley, her script being heavily marked up with directions etc. but also with names and addresses, an alphabet and doodles, suggesting longeurs backstage. Fleming was from a most creative family; daughter of Oscar-nominated actress Celia Johnson and author Peter Fleming, niece of both the prize-winning Baroque cellist Amaryllis Fleming, and of 'James Bond' creator Ian Fleming. She has enjoyed a long career on television and radio, including Survivors, The Avengers, Mr. Bean and The Archers, whilst also stewarding the literary James Bond as head of Ian Fleming Publications.
