Publisher's hardcovers in pictorial dust-wrapper, designed by the author. Presentation note in ink to endpaper 'With best wishes / to James / McGovern / from / Richard Chopping // 12/3/66. Some spotting to edges, in near fine, price-clipped jacket. Later part of the Jon Gilbert collection. Inscribed copies are genuinely scarce (no other example listed at the time of writing). Chopping was a the artist responsible for the memorable series of jacket designs which adorned Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. This was his first attempt at fiction, which was well received and established him as a credible author in his own right. 'A scarifying first novel... comic, macabre and sordid' -from the blurb. This pair from the comprehensive collection assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled ownership. His encyclopaedic guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. Item #73953
