Octopussy (James Bond short stories).
London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. [Short stories] FIRST EDITION, BINDING B, EXPORT COPY. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.95. Publisher's BLACK cloth-effect paper over boards, blocked in silver, patterned grey endpapers, pictorial dust-jacket illustrated by Richard Chopping. This copy was exported to Brazil (bookseller ticket of Livaria Editora Kosmos, Rio - Sao Paulo - Porto Alegre), price clipped accordingly. Minor toning to text block due to climate else fine. Shows extremely well, housed in an elegant leather-spined clamshell box. Sold c.1990s by London booksellers Harrington Brothers, with their catalogue slip tucked in (Harrington Brothers ceased trading in 1997). A most unusual variant binding, tooled exactly to pattern but using a black cloth. Most copies were bound in a brown or grey-brown cloth; unfortunately, some booksellers have mistakenly or inadequately described their copies as black when in fact they are dark brown. The previous James Bond titles Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me and On Her Majesty's Secret Service were also originally issued in a dark brown or dark grey cloth, not black. Genuinely scarce, and one for the Fleming completist! Item #72630
