The Short Night.

London: Arthur Barker, 1968. [Thriller] SECOND EDITION (new jacket design, first thus). Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.190; [2], blank. Publisher's purple cloth with gilt titles to spine, photographic dust-jacket by Bob Guccioni, priced at 25s. Contents clean, no inscriptions, near fine in similar jacket. First published in 1961, The Short Night is a romantic espionage thriller set in Finland, with a breathtaking climax on the Russian frontier. The film rights were acquired by Alfred Hitchcock in the late '60s and Canadian author Kirkbride adapted his novel to a screenplay. The lead role was reportedly offered to Sean Connery, however due to the director's ill health, Universal Pictures cancelled the project in 1979. The novel was reviewed by best-selling novelist Alistair Maclean (publication unknown), with a supporting quote from his review, comparing Kirkbride to Ian Fleming, appearing on the front panel. The same quote appears on to rear panel, with a further comparison to Ian Fleming by Maurice Richardson (Observer). This copy is from the collection of Ian Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert, with pencil ownership. Item #71691
