McCallum was a household name due to Ian Fleming's brainchild series The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Telly Savalas would star in the following year's blockbuster James Bond film. The Heroin Gang was produced by Elliott Kastner, who had a successful partnership with thriller writer Alistair MacLean, adaptating his novels Where Eagles Dare, When Eight Bells Toll, Fear is the Key and Breakheart Pass.
