Near fine in like wrapper. On The Black Hill, the author's first novel, was awarded the 1982 James Tait Black Memorial Prize, founded in memory of a partner in the publishing house of A. and C. Black Ltd., and one of the oldest and most prestigious book awards in Britain. Artist Mon Mohan illustrated the jacket for John Gardner's first James Bond novel the previous year.
