The Fly.
New York: Farrer, Straus & Giroux, 1965. [Modern literature/60s culture] FIRST U.S. EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.291; [1], blank. Publisher's hardcover in pictorial dust-wrapper, designed by the author. No inscriptions, contents clean, top edges dusty/spotted, some foxing to jacket. Very good indeed. A satirical melodrama in an office setting, the cast includes a frustrated workplace love triangle, a Detective Inspector, 'a prostitute' and 'a homosexual'. 'Dickie' Chopping was the artist responsible for the memorable series of jacket designs which adorned Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. This was his first attempt at fiction, which was well received and established him as a credible author in his own right. 'A scarifying first novel... comic, macabre and sordid' -from the blurb. This copy is from the James Bond collection assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled ownership. His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. Item #66239
Gilbert p.637.
