'The Evil of Dr. No' in Today (The New John Bull), April 21st, 1962.

London: Odhams Press, 1962. Magazine format in pictorial paper wraps, with photographs throughout. Original price: 6s. Near fine. Includes a rather damning rant on James Bond and author Ian Fleming, whose books are described as "deplorable, disgusting drivel". The debut film of the series is, then in production, is criticised for its sex, lust and violence. Published under the headline "Why Britain should say 'No' to 'Dr. No', and all the other nasty things his creator writes about", the Today paper (previously a publisher of an Ian Fleming short story), distances itself from the author in no uncertain terms, declaring that they "shall not in future run stories by Ian Fleming". This rare copy is from the comprehensive James Bond collection assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencilled signature within). His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. This is the only complete copy seen by Gilbert (the publisher's file at the Cape Archive contains only a press clipping). Item #65592

Gilbert, Section K, p.608.
