London: Jonathan Cape, 1964. [Spy novel] FIRST EDITION, First State, Binding A, British export/colonial copy. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.256. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with silver titles to spine and Japanese characters in gilt to upper, bamboo patterned endpapers, dust-jacket by Richard Chopping (version on soft card, not paper). Toning to edges commensurate with the climate, else near fine in similar jacket. This copy was exported and sold in Johannesburg, SA (seller ticket of Exclusive Books Pty. Ltd. to pastedown), price clipped accordingly. Discreet owner stamp 'Bakkies Rossouw' to front endpaper, local pencil prices to first leaf, ink name obscured to same. Shows well. UK Cape editions of Fleming's best-selling James Bond series were imported by British overseas territories across the globe [Gilbert], as demonstrated by the present copy. Founded in 1951 in central Johannesburg, Exclusive Books is one of South Africa's largest bookselling chains; the Hillbrow branch where this copy was purchased was their second store to open, in 1954.
